Austin's first telephone answering service was founded in 1948 by Ann Hastings under the name of Austin Answering Service.
In 1950, the Hastings moved their home and business to East 17th street. Key boxes were introduced in 1951, and shortly thereafter, Mrs. Hastings moved the business into the Littlefield Building.
A technological leap was taken in 1957, when the first "cordboard" was obtained. The original Bell 557-B Switchboard is on display at Hastings. Switchboards were the mainstay of the business for 22 years.
In 1965, Austin Answering Service incorporated and changed its name to Hastings Telephone Answering Service. In 1979, Hastings installed its first computerized telephone answering system, and in 1981, installed Austin's first voice mail system.
In 1986, Hastings Telephone Answering Service fully modernized its operation. They moved to a central location at Shoal Creek and 11th Street, and installed state-of-the-art computer systems. As the demands of Hastings' clients changed, Hastings invested in technology to integrate many vast electronic delivery services, and expanded its commitment to customer service.
In 1993, Hastings Telephone Answering Service became Hastings Communication Services. The name change more accurately reflects the broad scope of the services Hastings offers. Today, Hastings acts as an extension of their clients customer service department, taking orders, answering frequently asked questions, directing callers to the proper service technicians, as well as acting as receptionists.
All the services Hastings offers are built upon strengths developed over 55 years, such as our expertise in customer service, our ability to respond to our customers needs, and our expert knowledge of the latest advances in communication services and technology.
Currently, 40 women and men are employed at Hastings as Telephone Secretaries. Hastings currently serves approximately 1,500 clients.
Hastings Communication Services is an active member of Association of Telemessaging Services International (ATSI), the Telemessaging Services Association of Texas (TSAT), the Startel National Users Group (SNUG), The Business Connection and Business Success Center formerly The Entrepreneurs Association.
Hastings is a seven time winner of the "Award of Excellence" presented by the Association of Telemessaging Services International.
